Workington mayor Ann Bales yesterday held her civic service in the church in which she had previously celebrated several key events in her life.

Coun Ann Bales invited civic dignitaries from across Allerdale to join her at the town's Our Lady and St Michael's Church in Banklands.

She chose the venue as it was the church in which she was confirmed, had her first communion and, in 1971, married husband Peter, who is also a town councillor.

The service celebrated Councillor Bales' new role as mayor, as well as giving people the chance to meet her formally.

It was led by Father Paul Harrison, with readings from Coun Antony McGuckin and Workington MP Sue Hayman.

Guests included Mayor of Allerdale Mary Bainbridge and the mayors of Cockermouth, Keswick, Silloth and Wigton.
