Honister Slate Mine will be staging two special screenings of a British horror classic deep inside a Lake District mountain next month.

It will be first time a full-length film has been shown down the mine and follows the success of an event in September which saw a full-piece orchestra stage a one-off concert inside the aptly named Fiddler’s Cavern.

Now, up to 100 people will have the chance to see the underground screenings of 2005 cult film The Descent on March 5 and 6.

It follows the fortunes of six women trapped in an underground cave system and hunted by horrifying creatures.

England’s largest working slate mine will be enlisting the help of some local street theatre artists who will throw in a few surprises to keep the audience on their toes.

Mulled wine, plus a non-alcoholic version, will also be served to help steady the nerves.

Adam Hocking, marketing manager at Honister Slate Mine, said: "We always try to do something unique and these two horror evenings are something completely new for Honister.

"What better place to experience the full dramatic impact of a spine-tingling horror film than deep underground, in this atmospheric and almost other-worldly space!"

Over-18s can buy tickets for £17.50 each by calling 017687 77230 or online at www.honister.com

The ticket price includes transport from Honister Slate Mine’s main reception to the mine.
