The world of model railways will be brought to life at an exhibition in Workington this weekend.

The Workington Model Railway Exhibition will take place at Energus at Lillyhall today and tomorrow.

Enthusiasts from across Cumbria and the north east will be displaying their layouts at the event.

Ray O'Neill from Workington will be displaying his new End of the Spur layout and Peter Mills, a member of Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway staff, will showcase his Loch Syd layout.

This year's exhibition has been organised by Solrail, a not-for-profit organisation of enthusiasts and volunteers.

Solrail have been running the events for the last five years and took over from the Workington Transport Heritage Trust.

The organisation's aim is to make the event go from strength to strength and to keep model railway enthusiasm alive.

Demonstrators from Horwich, Preston, Washington, Carlisle, Glasson and Skinburness will also be on hand to give people advice about how to make their model railways look good.

A computer train simulation will also be on offer and people will be able to drive a train of their choice along several lines including the Settle to Carlisle route.

Free car parking and refreshments are on offer.

A regular bus service will also run from Workington and Whitehaven railway stations on both days.

Philip Tuer, exhibition manager, said: "It's been hard work getting the exhibition together this year, but I've got a good team that helps out and we're all looking forward to getting together on Friday to set it up.

"It's going to be a good weekend and there are some lovely models on show.

"People who are interested in model railways will enjoy it thoroughly."

The exhibition will be open from 10am to 5pm today and 10am to 4pm tomorrow.

Admission is £5 and accompanied children can get in for free. Entry also includes a free guide to what's on.
