A Workington businessman has again demanded that urgent action is taken to reduce the speed limit on a stretch of road following two more accidents there.

John Hetherington, who runs Glyndale Kennels on Whitehaven Road on the A596, has been calling for the current 60 mile per hour restriction to be reduced as soon as possible.

One incident took place at around 5pm on Friday, August 21 which involved three cars, and a woman was treated for shock.

The other happened on Saturday, August 22 also at 5pm, and a man was treated for minor injuries following the three-car collision.

Cumbria County Council has started a consultation into reducing speed limits and it would mean the current restriction of 60 mph would be eventually reduced to 40 mph.

But Mr Hetherington wants the limit to be dropped as soon as possible.

He said: "I hope this will be a wake-up call. There have been three accidents in three weeks and someone will be killed again, it's just a matter of when.

"The sooner they get the speed limit down the better. There needs to be better information for drivers. I can't see why they can't make it 30 miles per hour all the way out instead of 40."

Last week's accidents mean that there have been four crashes on the road in the last month.

Mr Hetherington is also maintaining his call for the signs to be made bigger in a bid to reduce the number of crashes.

He added: "Three customers of mine had to wait because I could not get through and I had to pick up two dogs myself. It's affecting our customers and I have to do much more.

"It's our biggest bugbear, getting in and back out. We have had to stop traffic so we can get our deliveries in. Drivers take that bend too sharp. After it's been raining, the road is really slippy and there is no grip."

A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said: “The council is currently consulting on proposals to lower or extend speed limits on several roads in Allerdale, including a proposal to reduce the limit from 60mph to 40mph on a section of the A596 Castle Gardens, Workington.

"The consultation ends on August 30 and the proposals will be considered by the Allerdale local committee later this year.”
