More volunteer drivers from the Cockermouth area are needed for a community transport scheme.

Cumbria County Council's voluntary car scheme provides transport for people 16 and over who cannot make their journey by public or private transport.

There are only four drivers available at the moment in Cockermouth. Co-ordinator Jules Fawkes is hoping six more people will offer their services.

"I have at least 15 people a week wanting lifts but do not have enough drivers at the moment," she said.

Volunteers get fuel expenses. Most of the customers are older people, often going to medical appointments, including ones at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

"It's an invaluable service for those living remotely with no access to transport," said Mrs Fawkes.

"Some people who use it do not see anyone else that day. They really enjoy their chat with the driver. That social interaction is so important."

The drivers also enjoy it. "They all say they love it. They enjoy helping someone and getting out and about and seeing and speaking to different people," said Mrs Fawkes.

Anyone who can help - or would like to use the service - should ring Mrs Fawkes on 07523134825.
