Equipment is filling Workington’s new £11.3 million leisure centre.

The building on The Cloffocks is due to open next month and will replace the centre at Moorclose, which is due to be demolished.

The new leisure centre includes the only eight-lane, 25m pool in the county, a learner pool with movable floor, a 90-station gym and a free weights studio, two multi-purpose studios, a sports hall, two squash courts, a sauna and steam room, a climbing wall and an artificial and five-a-side pitches.

Contractor Robertson was due to handover the building to Allerdale council, which commissioned the work, on Monday.

But the council said issues resulted in a delay. A spokesman added: “Handover is due to happen any day now.

“There are some issues which need to be resolved before the formal paperwork can be completed, but this is not unusual in the final stages of a project like this and it’s not expected to delay the centre opening to the public.

“We’ve said right from the start of this project that we want everything to be of the highest quality and we’re just making sure everything is right before we open the doors.”
