Over-50s can take part in gentle swimming and sports sessions at Workington Leisure Centre for just £2 this weekend.

The sessions will be held by Greenwich Leisure Ltd, which runs the centre, and is part of Allerdale council's work to improve health and wellbeing.

Fit For Your Age is being held to mark Silver Sunday, Grandparents Day and Older People’s Day.

Sessions will be held from 10am and gym inductions will take place throughout the weekend.

Councillor Mark Fryer, executive member responsible for sports development, said: "The council is proud to help mark such a significant weekend for the older people in the area.

"We recognise there is a need to get older residents across West Cumbria more active, and this is a great way to encourage them to keep fit while promoting the fantastic facilities that are available for all generations – you’re never too old for a swim.

"We hope to see plenty of people coming along to enjoy the range of activities on offer.”

Garry Schubert, leisure centre general manager, added: "We’ve got a great programme of events this weekend that we hope will encourage anyone over 50 to come down and have a look around our fantastic new centre.

"They can try out activities such as badminton, squash, table tennis and swimming for a single charge of just £2.

"We would love to see new people join our already established weekly sessions for over 50s such, as aerobics and swimming."
