Redundant phone boxes in Cockermouth are unsightly and need to be dealt with, says a town councillor.

Councillor Alan Smith told a town council meeting: “Twelve months ago we decided to support BT and the people putting defibrillators in them.

“They have subsequently taken out the phones and left them to become a dilapidated eye sore, they are dirty and have weeds growing out of them. To make matters worse they light up at night and look awful.”

He said three boxes needed to be dealt with, on Windmill Lane, Market Place and Woodside Avenue.

Councillor Isobel Burns said: “They should be removed if they’re not being used.”

The council will send its concerns to the people behind the plans.
