Keswick town centre will resemble the seven seas on Saturday as part of a Pirate Day celebration.

Geraud Markets, which operates the market on behalf of Allerdale council, has organised the event to mark the annual Love Your Local Market and the 740th anniversary of Keswick's market charter.

Stallholders and staff from shops will don eyepatches, hats and swords and members of the public are being encouraged to join in by wearing pirate or princess outfits.

The event will include a special appearance from Captain Jack Sparrow, live music, entertainment, free facepainting and candyfloss and a treasure hunt.

Nik Hardy, Allerdale council’s head of economic growth, said: "It’s been a difficult time for Keswick following the December floods and the subsequent closure of the A591, so this event is an opportunity to boost footfall in the town centre, promote Keswick as a shopping destination and to have some fun."

Love Your Local Market is annual celebration of the UK's market industry which takes place over two weeks in late spring.

Its aim is to highlight the importance of markets and the role they play in towns.

A Love Your Local Market event will take place on Monday at Cockermouth with fairground rides on Fairfield car park, entertainment and a market in Wilko's car park.

On Wednesday, June 1 a half-term fun event is scheduled at Workington's town centre market featuring music, facepainting and entertainment.
