A decision over plans for a £3 million "transport hub" at Workington Railway Station is due to be made on Wednesday.

Cumbria County Council wants to expand the station's car park to provide 148 bays and bike stands.

The planning application was due to go before the council’s planners earlier this year, but was delayed.

The plan, which was also going to include provision for buses, was revised.

The county said: "There is limited desire to significantly alter the bus routing, which while it does not lend itself to efficient bus/rail interchange, is the bus operators’ commercial response to passenger demand for bus services.

"Therefore the primary objective of the current hub scheme is to provide sufficient formal car parking combined with improved cycle and pedestrian links to the station.”

The application is due to be discussed by the county's development control and regulation committee on Wednesday.

Last month, in a separate scheme, the authority revealed it wanted to build a £6 million office complex for up to 300 workers at Workington Goods Yard, next to the railway station.
