Quirky play equipment is being planned for Workington's new leisure centre, thanks to a £50,000 grant.

Funding body WREN agreed to provide the money to install giant climbable letters and protective rubber matting for the centre's youngest visitors.

The cash will also be used to buy outdoor games tables which can be used to play games such as snakes and ladders and have roads for toy cars, as well as for eating and drinking.

The funding will also contribute to the cost of landscaping of the grounds around the new sports facility.

The new swimming pool and leisure centre is being built by Allerdale council on land next to Brow Top car park in the town centre.

It is due to open in spring next year.

Councillor Michael Heaslip, Allerdale council’s executive member for locality services, said: "We want to make the new leisure centre as attractive as possible to people of all ages so installations like the climbable letters and the games tables will add quirky new appeal for our visitors.

“They’ll be free to use too so we hope this will become a really social space for families and visitors.”

The new swimming pool and leisure centre in Workington will replace the two ageing buildings which house the town’s current swimming pool and sports centre at Moorclose.
