Cockermouth is set to get new tourist maps thanks to funding from Allerdale council.

The town council has agreed that £5,000 should be spent producing and distributing the maps, which will feature a 3D artist's impression of the town.

The money will come from £10,000 allocated to town projects by the borough council.

Welcome to Cockermouth signs will be installed in nine locations, including the town's six car parks, showing the map and information about the town.

The signs will include dispensers, allowing tourists to buy a paper map for £1.

A scheme is already in place in Keswick.

It could be in place in Cockermouth by Christmas.

The confluence area where the River Derwent and River Cocker meet could also be upgraded using some of the money.

Plans have been drawn up to improve paths and seating, clear weeds, improve planting and tidy up the area, known as Drury Head.

The whole project is expected to cost around £15,000 and £3,000 has been allocated from the money Allerdale council has provided to the town.

This borough council project will need to attract further funding to go ahead.

The remaining £2,000 for the town is set to go towards lighting up the war memorial on Station Road.

Town councillors want to install four uplighters to keep the memorial permanently lit.

Work is expected to cost about £7,600, with funding needed from elsewhere to make up the difference.

Meanwhile, the public toilets on Main Street are set to be spruced up in a project agreed last year.

Allerdale council will fund the work from £10,000 it allocated to the town last year.

The toilets will be closed from Tuesday to Thursday while they are steam cleaned and painted.
