Plans have been revealed for 100 new homes in a West Cumbrian village.

The trustees of the Copsey Family Trust want to build the housing estate on land east of Low Seaton, behind the village’s Royal British Legion club.

Part of the building would be demolished to create access to the new site and the car park relocated to the rear of the site.

Peter Gilmour, club steward, said: “The part of the building that would be demolished currently hosts the snooker and pool room, which would be moved to the main building.

“I think this would be positive for the legion as it would generate more trade.

“To be honest I’m all in favour for expanding Seaton. We need to provide people with somewhere to live.

“Whether the plans go ahead or not the legion will still be here.”

Phyllis Scott, 73, who lives on Camerton Road next to the earmarked site, said: “I’m worried and anxious. Several thoughts passed through my mind in less than a split second when I found out.

“How on earth will Camerton Road and Church Road cope with the traffic?

“There’s a one-way system on Causeway Road going into Low Seaton and it’s already difficult with cars parked on each side of the road because it’s reliant on people’s good manners and politeness, flashing to let you know you can go ahead.

“If that is to become the access to the site, I don’t know how the viability would work.”

The five-hectare field is currently identified by Allerdale council as open countryside, not as land for housing development.

A planning application for three homes in Low Seaton was refused earlier this week because of potential access problems.

Planning officers also believed the character of the area would be harmed if the development was given the go-ahead as it extends into open countryside.

Celia Tibble, who represents the ward on the parish, borough and county councils, said: “I’m speechless. If there was a need for a development in Seaton that would be the wrong place.”

The Copsey Family Trust declined to comment.
