A plan to raise awareness of Cockermouth's conservation area has been supported by the town council.

Cockermouth and District Civic Trust will celebrate its 50th anniversary later this year. As part of its celebrations it wants to play its part in a national campaign to support conservation areas.

The group has secured funding and hopes to produce a booklet on the conservation areas in Cockermouth and Papcastle to be distributed to the 1,600 properties involved.

The colour booklet would include details about such areas, a map, details about constraints on development and contacts for further information.

It also hopes to work with Allerdale council to review the conservation area.

Phil Campbell, chairman of the trust, met with councillors last week. He said they proposed to set up a joint working group.

"We need an input from Allerdale council but the initiative has to come from us, the civic trust, and the town council," said Mr Campbell.

Councillors supported the idea. Mayor Sam Standage and Councillor Julie Laidlow agreed to be part of the working group.
