A popular riverside path in Cockermouth which was badly damaged in December’s floods has been repaired thanks to a grant from the Cumbria Community Foundation.

The footpath between Waterloo Street and Low Sand Lane was torn up by water, leaving a muddy channel. Cockermouth and District Civic Trust, which includes the path in its town tours, was keen to have it repaired.

Trust chairman Phil Campbell said: “The civic trust has been concerned about the condition of this footpath ever since the flood damage in 2015.

“It is a path that is well used by locals for leisure and dog walking and by visitors following the Town Trail.

“Initially, we considered restoring the path by our own voluntary effort but this did require movement of a lot of barrow loads of gravel.

“We were therefore very pleased to obtain a grant from the Cumbria Community Foundation Flood Recovery Fund to allow a full and professional repair, and to go into partnership with Allerdale council to contract out the work to ISS.”
