Maryport has been praised by the Duke of Lancaster's Regimental Association for its efforts to honour fallen servicemen and women on Remembrance Sunday.

John Wallace, secretary of the West Cumbria branch of the association, has written to Maryport Town Council, praising those who turned out.

He said: "I was truly amazed at the sheer number. I have not seen such a response from such a small community in the years I have been attending these ceremonies.

"On behalf of our association can I say how amazed and proud we all were at the turnout and respect shown by the citizens of Maryport and district. I was truly amazed at the sheer number."

An estimated 450 people attended the church service at St Mary's.

It was not all plain sailing, though, after an administrative error by police led to parade having to make its way from Fleming Square to the church, then on to Memorial Gardens, without any officers controlling traffic.

Cumbria police has pledged to donate £50 to the Royal British Legion as an apology for the mistake.

A spokesman said: "Across West Cumbria this year there were 12 separate events. Unfortunately an officer who was scheduled to be in Maryport was unable to attend.

"Due to an administrative error we were unable to send a replacement officer.

"The force would like to apologise to the organisers of the Maryport event and to the public for any convenience. We will look to ensure such an error will not happen again."
