Electricity problems have delayed the opening of Cockermouth’s newest hotel and restaurant.

The Premier Inn, on Egremont Road, was due to open today, along with the Brewers Fayre restaurant on the same site.

But power problems have delayed progress this week. Generators are in place at the moment, full power is expected to be back on tomorrow, when staff will start taking bookings.

Eight people had reserved rooms in the hotel tonight, their bookings have been transferred to the company's other West Cumbrian branch, The Howgate.

The hotel and restaurant will be fully open on Monday.

Operations manager Karl Hetherington said: "We were due to open today but we have had power problems, the electricity has been off.

"We will have a practice night tonight for managers and the teams and then lines will open tomorrow, so people can book the restaurant and rooms. We will then be fully open on Monday.

"It feels awesome to be at this stage. The contractors are nearly finished, it feels like we have achieved so much this week."

The businesses employ about 60 staff between them and have been built on the site of the former Shepherds Hotel, previously the Sheep and Wool Centre.
