Hats and horses will be the order of the day at a Cockermouth art centre's latest fundraising initiative.

Friends of the Kirkgate are organising a pie and peas supper and race night and are hoping local businesses will sponsor a race.

Jane Sheppard said: "The eight races are actual races that have been filmed and recorded to be shown as part of a fun evening to raise more funds as part of our ongoing plan to extend and improve the premises."

Businesses can have a race named after them in return for a donation to the Kirkgate (£10 minimum) and a prize for the winner. The prize can be cash, goods or a voucher.

People can also buy a horse in advance, for £3, and name it.

"We are delighted to have sponsorship from Lloyd Motors and Jennings Brewery and hope others will get in touch," said Jane.

"We haven't tried this before and thought it would be fun. There are tables of eight so people can come in a group if they would like, although that's not necessary.

"Posh frocks and fancy hats are an optional extra!"

The race night will take place on Saturday, September 16. The first race is at 7pm.

Tickets cost £10, which includes supper and a race card, can be bought from the Kirkgate Centre (www.kirkgatearts.org.uk).
