Carnival fever swept through the villages of Great and Little Broughton at the weekend and brought hundreds of people out to join in the fun.

The colourful parade kept everyone entertained as it headed through town.

There were four bands, lots of queens, including many visiting ones, a dance troupe and no end of fancy dress.

Carnival secretary Anne Davis said: "It was great, a really busy carnival. So many people said it was the best one for a for a long, long time.

"It was raining as we set off but it cleared up for the crowning ceremony on the Welfare Field."

There were 120 children in the parade, including a group from Broughton Primary School in their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory costumes.

Broughton Red Rose swapped their rugby ball for a tennis one and looked very smart in their Wimbledon whites.

Carnival regular man Bertie Rayson was representing Strictly Come Dancing, there were also dinosaurs and great pub entertainment.

Only one prize is presented at the carnival and that is for best entertainment en route. This was won by The Full Monty from the Sun Dial Inn, who kept everyone laughing as they revealed what was under their bath robes.

Brewery House regulars donned their camoflauge kit and called themselves Browton Barmy Army.

Tyneside Pipe Band took part, along with brass bands from Workington, North Allerton and Mossley.

There was lots of entertainment on the Welfare Field and the festivities continued into the evening at the Legion and the village pubs.
