A Cockermouth bookshop will welcome TV's Richard Madeley next week.

The BBC Radio 2 presenter will visit The New Bookshop, in temporary accommodation on Main Street, to sign copies of his new book, The Night Book, at 1pm on Tuesday, July 5.

Shop owner Catherine Hetherington said: "He mentioned us on the radio on Sunday. He is coming to sign copies of his new book and meet people.

"It will be really nice to meet him and interesting to talk to him. He and his wife, Judy Finnigan, have championed books and reading and are now both writers.

"We're not expecting Judy to be with him. His book is a thriller which is set in Windermere, I've just started reading it."

On Friday, the bookshop sponsored a talk by their all-time best selling author, Cumbrian farmer James Rebanks.

His sell-out show was staged at The Kirkgate Centre, as part of Cockermouth Live!

"It was a great success, he was very entertaining and there were lots of good questions," said Catherine.

His book, The Shepherd's Life, which was first published last year, is the bookshop's best-selling title since it opened in 1968.

"We have sold hundreds of copies and are still selling it, in fact he signed some more copies for us on Friday. He really grabbed a lot of local interest and the book went on to become an international bestseller," Mrs Hetherington added.
