Roads in West Cumbria still remain closed following heavy weekend rain.

A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said: "Our highways staff have been working through the night to help get the county's roads open.

"Twelve crews plus support have been focused on clearing debris from the roads caused by flooding.

"There have been fallen trees due to the high winds as well as material washed onto the roads by water running off fells and fields.

"Clearance work will continue through the day with several roads still closed. While the rain may have stopped drivers still need to take care on the roads today."

The county council's update says the following roads are closed due to flooding and workers are waiting for the waters to recede:

  • Dearham to A594
  • Mary Mount Hotel, Borrowdale Valley
  • Dubmill Point
  • Broughton to Camerton
  • Baggrow
  • Moor Road, Stainburn
  • The following roads are open:
  • The A66 at Threlkeld
  • Boltongate to Ireby

Workers are on site between Keswick to Bothel to clear drains to alleviate flooding on the carriageway.

The River Cocker in Cockermouth broke its banks over the weekend, but the flood defences held.

Cockermouth Flood Action Group was on alert throughout the weekend, monitoring the situation and using Facebook to share the latest news as it happened.

The Cocker broke its banks in several places, but the flood plains did their job and the new defences were only raised several inches.

Posting on the Facebook group, a spokesman for the action group yesterday revealed the impact the defences have had on the town.

“There is still lots of capacity within the flood defences so all should be well,” they wrote. “Gote Road would have been flooded by now but the new defences and drainage system have done their job.”
