Work on a £15,000 scheme to improve the road outside a Workington school is due to start on Monday.
The county council is working with St Gregory's Primary School, at Furness Road, Moorclose, to create additional road space outside the school.
Gerald Humes, county councillor for the ward, said there had been ongoing problems with safety on the road.
A spokesman for the county council said: "There have been issues with that section of road in the past.
"The work is expected to last a week-and-a-half, weather permitting, and the road will remain open, although traffic lights will be operating while work is carried out."
