Maryport's archaeological dig will be featured on BBC 2's Coast on Thursday.

The Roman Temples Project at Camp Farm was filmed by the series last year and the episode, called the Irisih Sea, will feature aerial filming of the site, the excavation and interviews with project director Professor Ian Haynes and site director Tony Wilmott.

The five-year archaeological project, commissioned by the Senhouse Museum Trust and supported by Newcastle University, ends this year.

The site was transferred to the North of England Civic Trust earlier this year, which has co-operated with the Senhouse Roman Museum and the university to allow the final dig to go ahead.

This year’s dig ends on Friday August 14.

Prof Haynes said: “So much depends on this last crucial season. We believe that we have located the general area where the altars once stood, now we are closing in on the part of the site where we think that they were originally erected.

"By the end of the season we hope to have a detailed understanding of one of the most important Roman cult complexes ever to have been explored in Britain.”

Tours of the excavation site, led by the museum's volunteer guides, start from the museum on weekday afternoons at 2pm and 3.30pm..

Coast will be broadcast on BBC 2 on Thursday at 9pm.
