Sam Standage has set a new record by being voted in as mayor of Cockermouth for the fourth time.

Councillor Standage, 71, of Harrot Hill, was elected at the town council’s annual meeting.

He has been on the town council for 25 years.

His wife Hilary will be mayoress.

Coun Alan Tyson, 73, of Newlands Road, was voted in as deputy mayor.

They will also be chairman and vice chairman of the council.

Coun Standage said: "I’m delighted to be mayor, really thrilled and grateful for the opportunity.

"It’s nice to be involved in the community and meet such a lot of different organisations and people."

Retiring mayor Julie Laidlow thanked all the councillors for their support.

She said: "This has been one of the best and busiest years of my life.

"I have carried out all my duties with pride, honour and respect, made many new friends and enjoyed every event I have attended.

"Chairing council meetings is not the most memorable of experiences but I would like to thank you all for your support."

She thanked her mayoress, Lorna Martin, for all her help, and also town clerk Sheila Brown and assistant, Kirstie Goodger, for their expert guidance and support.

Coun Len Davies said: "I would like to thank and congratulate you and Lorna for the way you have represented this town, we are so grateful for what you have done."
