Silloth Green has been named among the best in the UK.

It has been given a prestigious Green Flag Award by Keep Britain Tidy.

It is the third time that Silloth Green, which hosts a number of events every year, has won the award since an ambitious two-year regeneration project which saw more than £1 million pumped into the site and its historic buildings.

Tony Markley, town mayor, said: “This award recognises Silloth Green as a well-managed, high quality green space, which could not have been achieved without the dedicated work of our town council staff, grounds maintenance team, and community volunteers.”

Events on the green include Silloth Vintage Rally, Silloth Green Day, Silloth Carnival, Silloth Beach Half Marathon and 10K and the music and beer festival still to take.

On Sunday, the site will play host to an open-air performance of The Tempest.

Councillor Bill Jefferson, chairman of Silloth Town Council’s parks committee, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the third time from Keep Britain Tidy.”

The money for the refurbishment came from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Rural Development Programme for England.

During the renovation, the Edwardian ladies toilets, built in 1910, and the Victorian pagoda on a hill overlooking the sea were refurbished.

After being officially reopened in 2012, the green now boasts a water play area, an entertainment area made out of local sandstone, a woodland adventure play area, a putting green and a newly-revamped BMX track.

A community garden opened in 2014 and earlier this year a new rose garden was installed.
