One of West Cumbria's top festivals is celebrating this year's comeback with four nominations in the UK Festival Awards.

After taking a year off in 2014, Solfest entertained more than 3,000 people at this year's event at Tarns, near Aspatria.

It has been nominated for the best small festival, grassroots festival, best family festival and best toilets awards.

Tom Kay, one of the directors of Solfest, said: "The nomination I'm most proud of is the grassroots award.

"It's an award we were nominated for in the early days of Solfest and after that we grew.

"Independent festivals see constant growth as a natural process, but that's not the way we wanted Solfest to go.

"This year we made a conscious decision to return to our roots and I'm really happy that people saw that. The reason we took a year off in 2014 was to rethink our priorities and remain faithful to our principles that lead us to organise our own festival in the first place some 12 years ago.

"This decision to offer a more old school festival turned out to be the right one and all our hard work has paid off.

"I'm particularly proud of this result because we are a festival entirely lead by volunteers."

Solfest won the best family festival award in 2007.

Tom said: "I think the key to this is that there's such a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where you can party until late, but without excluding families. It's not just family friendly, we cater for families, so we're hoping to win this award again."

The festival committee is already at work to organise next year's event.

Tom said: "Initially there were mixed feelings about the decision to drop the main stage and the big dance tent, but the feedback we received following this year's event was very positive.

"People said they were able to wander around more and enjoy more of the festival. I think this is what small festivals are all about.

"For next year we're hoping to maintain the fresh, new look of Solfest. It's still early days, but we'll make sure we come up with a few surprises."
