A county councillor has called for a meeting to discuss the provision of bus shelters in Workington.

Alan Barry, who represents St Michael's ward, wants to work with the town council to provide two bus shelters at each side of Derwent Drive, opposite Morrisons supermarket.

He is due to meet with members of the town council's environment committee in January.

Coun Barry said: "I will fight my corner. You can't expect people to use public transport if they have to stand in the pouring rain waiting for the bus. I think it's wrong.

"If you want to get more cars off the road, you have to make it a pleasant experience.

"During a consultation, people in St Michael's said they wanted them."

The cost to install the facility for people travelling on the 50 and 51 bus from Westfield and Moorclose would be £10,340.

A total of £10,000 is available from the community travel plan for St Michael's ward and Coun Barry would provide the remaining cash from his divisional allowance.

The town council was asked to provide money for maintenance, but members of the policy and resources committee said at a meeting in September they feared the shelters could be targeted by vandals.

Coun Barry added: "If it proves it costs a lot to maintain, we'll remove them or ask for contributions to the stores.

"If you don't try, you don't know, they may never get touched by vandals.

"How can you talk about something you don't know about?

"Initially I wanted bus shelters with seats, but I proposed them without to discourage young people from gathering there."
