Speed limits on several roads in Allerdale could be lowered or extended.

Cumbria County Council has put forward a number of proposals for locations including the A596 Castle Gardens, Workington, High Hill, Keswick and Main Street in Great Broughton.

The proposals follow a review of speed limits within Allerdale by the council, which is now launching a consultation on the plans and the public is being invited to have their say.

It wants to extend the 30mph limit at High Hill in Keswick, near the junction of Church Lane, reduce the existing 30mph limit at three points along Main Street in Great Broughton and replace the national speed limit along Castle Gardens with stretches of 30mph, 40mph and 50mph.

The review was undertaken in line with Department for Transport guidance.

Road accident figures and traffic speed and volume figures were considered as part of the review, which also took account of the needs of all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders, as well as all vehicle drivers.

Councillor Gerald Humes, chairman of Cumbria County Council’s Allerdale local committee, said: “The council has reviewed existing speed limits in Allerdale and we’re now consulting on possible changes at several locations."

More information about the proposals is available online by visiting www.cumbria.gov.uk/allerdalespeedlimits where people can also submit comments and feedback.

All consultation responses must be submitted by August 30, and the proposals will then be considered by the council’s Allerdale local committee later this year.
