A kennel owner has said he is relieved that the speed limit will finally be lowered on a dangerous road outside of his business.

Another crash happened on the A596 at Castle Gardens in Workington early this morning – an area which has been plagued with accidents over the years.

Work was delayed last year after a council blunder, but the Times & Star has now been told that a proposed lower limit is expected to be in place in two weeks.

John Hetherington, who owns Glyndale Kennels, has campaigned for a decade to have safety measures put in place.

He is constantly repairing the wall outside of his business as he says drivers misinterpret the bend and smash into it.

He again faces a £2,000 bill to repair the wall after the latest incident, which closed the busy road for an hour, leaving a gaping hole in it.

After learning that work was to start imminently to lower the speed from 60mph to 40mph, he said he was relieved.

“It’s very good news,” he said. “It can’t happen quickly enough, but it should never have taken this long for something to happen.

“It should have taken place a long time ago. This road has always been a black spot but it seems nobody has known what to do about it.

“I hope it makes a difference, but for it to work the police and highways need to implement it.”

Cumbria County Council had agreed to lower the speed limit six months ago. But the process was put back after a discrepancy was found in the legal order for the work.

In the latest incident, the car, a Hyundai i20, was driven by a 26-year-old woman from Workington.

She was uninjured and police say it is believed the vehicle skidded on a slippery section of the road.
