A sporting sale will take place in Cockermouth next weekend.

The one-day auction at Mitchells next Saturday, October 8, features sporting art, the auction house's largest-ever gun section and a North American elk head.

Art includes a painting of a spaniel by George Jackson (1817-1876) estimated at £1,000-£1,500 and a pair of paintings of fish and game by Edward Coleman (1795-1867) valued at £1,000-£1,500 for the pair.

An oil on canvas portrait of the Caldbeck huntsman John Peel is expected to make between £300 to £500.

Highlights in the gun section include an antique Graham of Cockermouth 10 bore Webley built shotgun, believed to be from around 1894, which is valued between £500 to £800.

Other shotguns up for auction include makers such as Robertson of Whitehaven, Altham and Son of Penrith and rifles by Winchester, Eddystone, Lebel, Tikka and a Pedersoli Sharps Creedmore 45-70 calibre single shot rifle.

The taxidermy section features a massive 12 point North American Elk head and neck mount valued at £300-£500 and a 13 point red stag’s head estimated between £150 to £250.

Also in the sale are antique military and hunting knifes including a mid-19th century Hilliard of Edinburgh folding Bowie knife estimated between £100 to £150 and a Wilkinson Sword survival knife valued between £120 to £180.

The fishing section features a number of modern and antique rods and a selection of reels by Hardy.

Of local interest in the sale is a rare proof of a fell pack supporters hunt badge, the only one of its kind as it was never put into production, which is expected to make between £50 to £80.

In the collectables section is a large collection of Border Fine Arts figures and a number of hunt photographs relating to the local fell packs as well as an engraving of the Kendal Otter Hounds estimated at £30 to £50.

Lots can be viewed in person at Mitchells town centre saleroom from Friday, October 7, from 3pm to 7pm and from 8.30am to 10am on the day of the sale.

The sale starts at 10am.
