Hundreds of homes in Workington were left without power as severe weather hit the area yesterday.

About 800 properties in the town were hit by faults affecting Electricity North West's network.

They were among 10,000 affected across the region, most of whom have now had power restored.

Power cuts were not the only problem caused by high winds and heavy rain.

Just before 2pm on Saturday firefighters had to help an elderly man after his car became stuck in flood water on the B5300 coast road at Allonby.

Teams from Aspatria, Workington and Carlisle fire stations were called out.

Firefighters pushed the car out of the water with the driver steering it.

The Met Office issued yellow warnings of wind, rain and snow for Cumbria, with the bad weather expected to continue until Tuesday night.

Inland gusts of 50-60mph, possibly reaching 65 mph for parts of inland northern England and the far south of Scotland have been expected with gusts around western coasts possibly exceeding 75 mph, including along Cumbria's shoreline.

The Environment Agency is urging people along the Cumbrian coast to remain vigilant as high tides, strong winds and waves may combine to bring a risk of localised flooding.

Lee Preston, of the Environment Agency, said: “We continue to monitoring the situation closely with the Met Office and will issue flood alerts and warnings as required.

“It’s possible we could see some large waves and spray and urge people to take care near coastal paths and promenades and not to drive through flood water.”
