Glorious summer sunshine brought out the crowds as Keswick held its second Prom in the Park event yesterday.

Hundreds of people gathered at Fitz Park for the free event, held as part of the now-annual Keswick Festival.

As a cricket match and a youth athletics club carried on in the background, soprano Emily Robinson, violinist Louise Peacock and Carlisle Youth Wind Band performed a variety of light music.

Those attending relaxed on everything from straw bales to picnic blankets and even a portable table and chairs combo complete with checked tablecloth.

The headline act for the evening was Burneside Brass Band, who also topped the bill at last year’s event.

Rachel Wilkinson, of Leonard Street, attended with husband Richard, daughters Isabelle and Esme and her mum Lesley.

She said: “It’s very good. It seems to have brought a few visitors in to spend money in the town.

“We have only lived here a year so it’s really nice to come to this.”

Alan and Heather Dunn, of St John Street, brought their three granddaughters to the event.

Heather said: “It’s a nice event to bring the grandchildren and bring a nice picnic and chill.

“The weather’s perfect.

“It’s lovely to see other events going on in the park at the same time.”

Also attending the event was Neil Airey, of Heads Mount, who chairs Keswick Amateur Operatic Society.

He said: "It's great. All the arts should be accessible to everybody.

"People think opera is the top end of the market but it shouldn't be. It's just music.

"I like Mozart and I like Eminem. Opera shouldn't be for the Glyndebourne and Royal Opera House people, it should be for everyone."

The event was run by an events committee led by the town council.

Councillor Tony Lywood, one of the organisers, said: “The weather’s been a joy.

“It’s packed. The turnout is better than last year.

“It’s been a really great response. It’s a wonderful community thing.”
