A TV set is thought to be the cause of a blaze that broke out at a Workington house.

It set alight at around 4.20pm yesterday in the front bedroom of a terraced house on Frostoms Road.

Firefighters extinguished the fire almost immediately and used thermal imaging camera to check there were no further hotspots.

A woman and a dog were evacuated by a neighbour before the arrival of emergency services.

An 11-year-old boy suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital by his mother.

Police said several homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

David Ellwood, 47, spotted the fire from his garden, a few houses away from the property on fire, and kicked the door open to check if anyone was still trapped inside.

He said: "We saw the smoke coming up all of a sudden. It was coming out of the window.

"I went upstairs to see what was going on and shouted 'is anybody there', but I had no answer.

"I threw a bucket of water but that didn't do anything. I came back down stairs once I made sure there was no one still in the house."

He added that emergency services arrived at the scene as he was getting out of the property.

He said: "When I went in the house I wasn't scared, I was just concerned for my neighbours."
