A food festival will be held in Keswick in March to help boost the town after the December floods.

Taste Cumbria will take place on the town's Main Street on March 27 and 28.

It will feature a market with more than 50 traders selling food, drink and kitchenware, plus family activities and hot food to eat on the spot.

The festival will build on the success of the existing Taste Cumbria events held in Cockermouth and Ulverston, and the pop-up food villages which take place at Lowther Show and the Cumberland Show.

The main Cockermouth event is now in its seventh year.

Taste Cumbria was created following the 2009 floods which devastated the town.

Its aim was to attract visitors to the area and demonstrate that it was very much open for business, giving the county’s food and drink producers the chance to showcase their wares.

Just a week before Cockermouth was due to host its first Taste Cumbria Christmas food fair, the town was hit again by flood waters.

Thanks to a fantastic effort by traders and residents, festival organisers CN Events, Cockermouth and District Chamber of Trade and Allerdale council, with support from Sellafield Ltd and its supply chain, the festival went ahead, attracted international publicity for Cumbria and brought 20,000 people to the town.

Marie Whitehead, director of CN Events, said: "We are so pleased to be asked to stage a Taste Cumbria food festival in Keswick this year.

"It proves that it wasn’t beaten by December’s floods, and it helps us showcase everything that is great about this county’s spirit and resilience, as well as giving an even wider audience the chance experience our world famous amazing food and drink.

"We also want to make sure that Keswick’s festival visitors will be able to find out more about the wider area, and this is the perfect opportunity."
