The bollards and contraflow road system on Cockermouth's Main Street will be removed in time for the Christmas rush.

Work on the installation of the new flood defence drainage system for the town will be suspended for the Christmas holidays in the next week.

They are due to resume on January 16 when the second phase of work will be carried out along High Sands Lane.

That project is expected to last seven weeks.

The initial phase of work will be to complete the installation of the new flood defence drainage system.

The second phase of work, commencing after the Christmas break, will be to renew the carriageway and pavements in High Sand Lane.

Cockermouth by Candlelight will take place as scheduled on Friday at 6pm.

A lantern parade will make its way through town and many shops will stay open late, with lanterns in their doorways.

And the town’s annual beer festival will start at the Kirkgate Centre on Thursday.

Organised by then Cockermouth Round Table, the three day event features over 60 real ales, as well as lager and cider.

Live music will be provided by The Kasios and Mojo Rising.

Tickets are available from the Kirkgate Centre, Jennings Brewery Shop, The Swan, The Bitter End, The Bush and The Cock and Bull.
