Bidders relived their childhoods as a toy sale produced some surprise prices.

Bidding was intense at the auction, held at Mitchells in Cockermouth on Saturday.

And there was plenty of proof that you’re never too old to enjoy a good toy or cuddly bear as people forked out some impressive amounts of money for some of the goods on offer.

Among the top selling lots was an early 20th century Steiff teddy bear, which sold for £850.

Another of the highlights was a Stuart D10 steam engine that sold for £820.

A large-scale electric model of a German tug boat Samuel Lees , which was previously on display in Windermere’s Steamboat Museum, fetched £180.

A cased model of RMS Titanic sold for £150, well in excess of its £30-£50 estimate.

A surprise in the sale came when a boxed Hornby clockwork 0 gauge train set turned out to be a very early train set and sold for £320.

A Steiff fawn sold for £120 and a collection of 20 boxed Atlas Editions Classic Motorbikes models sold for £170.

A boxed vintage Denys Fisher Doctor Who Tardis model sold for £140.

There had been wide interest ahead of the sale as interest in collectables grows ever-intense.

The Steiff bear was always expected to bring with it some heavy bidding.

Ewan Duff, of Mitchells, said: “It’s not worn and I like the shape of the face, it’s really attractive. Steiff soft toys have a metal button on their ear, the writing style determines what age it is.”

Mitchells’ next vintage and antique toy sale will be on July 15, with a closing date for entries of June 16.

Staff there have experienced a surge in toys coming through the doors for potential sale, with people having a post-festive clear-out thought to be one of the driving factors with the surge in lots being brought forward for sales.
