Bassenthwaite Sailing Club is holding an event this weekend for people to try the sport.

The organisers say this will be the ideal time to try the sport, soon after the release of the Swallows and Amazons film and the success of Team GB at the Rio Olympics.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never stepped in a boat before, you and your family can get afloat and sample the freedom and exhilaration of a fantastic outdoor sport at this family-friendly club.

From 10am to 4pm tomorrow, the club is open and will be running free taster sessions.

Visitors will be taken out by experienced instructors. All the equipment and information needed will be provided to give an introduction to sailing. Booking in advance is recommended

Training officer Andrew Airnes said: “We are a friendly family oriented club who welcome all, from absolute beginners through to seasoned sailors, the only requirement is that you want to have a good time both on and off the water.

“The club provides a range of Royal Yachting Association approved sailing courses, in our modern fleet of dinghies, which are also available for club members to use for either for social sailing or racing.

“We have regular social events throughout the year in our well- appointed club house, with great views of the river."

The taster sessions are supported by the RYA.

Adam McGovern, RYA regional development officer for the North West said: “From the Rio 2016 Games to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, there’s never been a better time to feel inspired and to get out on the water. Sailing can be as physical or relaxing as you like. Why not try it for yourself for absolutely free?”
