A vital Cumbrian route which was destroyed by Storm Desmond is expected to reopen next week.

A four-mile stretch of the A591 – which links Keswick and Kendal - has been closed between the junction for St John’s in the Vale, just south of Keswick, and Dunmail Raise following a landslip.

Since December, commuters have had to find an alternative route through the heart of the Lake District, but last week a new route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders opened over Dunmail Trail.

Following a joint effort between Cumbria County Council, Highways England, United Utilities and the Lake District National Park, it is expected that the road will be open to motorists on Friday, May 13.

Keith Little, the county council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “That’s the date we’re currently working with and we’re hoping it will be reopened around lunchtime.

“United Utilities has worked with the Lake District National Park to create new culverts while ourselves and Highways England have been focusing on resurfacing the roads.”
