Residents in Maryport's Grasslot area feared a repeat of December's flooding after a water main burst.

Maryport Inshore Rescue spokesman, Gary Hampson, said water was pouring out of the mains and threatened houses that had already faced the December storms.

Mr Hampson said: "We were not called out but in light of what was happening we turned out anyway and began pumping away the water before United Utilities arrived. "We felt, in light of what happened in December, that out efforts would be appreciated."

United Utilities was called to Steer Avenue in Grasslot at 8.20pm.

A spokesman said a six-inch main had broken.

He added: "It took 10 minutes to turn the water off and around two hours to fix the problem."
