Cumbria is preparing itself for another onslaught of bad weather, with strong gales of up to 70mph expected to hit the county today.

Amber flood warnings have again been put in place for Lower and Upper River Eden, Stonethwaite Beck, Derwentwater and the rivers Cocker, Marron and Derwent.

Another red warning has also been issued for Keswick Campsite.

Although heavy showers are now becoming less frequent, southwesterly winds are expected from around noon, lasting until the early hours of tomorrow morning – leading to the Met Office issuing another yellow warning for the county.

In west Cumbria, gales of between 50 and 60mph are expected to hit, while they will be stronger further inland.

The Met Office is warning that heavy, blustery showers or some longer spells of rain could also lead to flooding on some roads in rural locations.

Motorists using both the A66 and A69 are advised to take extra care.

A Met Office spokesman said: “There will be a swathe of strong winds affecting southern and central Scotland as well as parts of Northern Ireland and northern England.”
