Why do you love your town? A group of Maryport youngsters have given their reasons by designing eight banners to be displayed around the town centre.

Netherton Infant School pupils put their heads together to create designs reflecting what they liked about Maryport, including notable areas like the beach, aquarium and harbour.

The artwork is a project by Allerdale council and Maryport Town Council and was erected on lampposts this week.

Town centre manager Toni Magean said: “Maryport is an up-and-coming area and we want to reflect that through attractive displays.

“We’ve got fantastic designs which are a way of making the town centre a bit more bright and cheerful.”

The banners will be permanent fixtures in the town and can be swapped out with new designs or to promote events.

A competition, organised by Allerdale council, was held to create similar banners promoting Workington.

The 15 winning designs included town landmarks like Workington Hall, Navvies Bridge, the Hub and the town clock and have been put up around the town centre.
