Work is due to begin on Workington Railway Station's new multi-million pound transport hub today.

The hub will provide more car parking spaces and stands for bicycles.

Plans for the £3 million project were approved last year.

The preliminary work includes setting up site compounds and bringing in equipment and machinery.

Work will officially begin on the hub on Monday, May 9 and temporary traffic lights on Solway Road will be put up on the same day.

The work is set to be finished by the end of the year.

A county council spokesman said: "Signals will be in operation as and when needed to protect the public and allow works to be safely carried out.

"We’ll be working with the contractor to try to minimise any disruption."

The aim of the project is to better link the station with improved bus, pedestrian and cycle links.

Supporters say the scheme will make the station a "more attractive commuter option".

Better commuting by rail is seen as crucial to tackling transport pressures along the Cumbrian coast, especially given the traffic increase that would come with construction of a new nuclear power plant at Moorside.
