Work has begun to repair flood defences in Keswick that were damaged in December's floods.

The Environment Agency is fixing the seals on glass panels alongside the River Greta at High Hill.

The work follows the removal of gravel from the river.

The panels, installed after the 2009 floods, were designed to withstand large volumes of water and debris.

During December's severe weather the panels remained in place but were overtopped by water during Storm Desmond, flooding nearby homes and businesses.

Through the work, each glass panel will be removed, refurbished and replaced in batches of six.

Metal sheets will be temporarily fitted while the panels are out.

The repair work is part of £10 million worth of work across Cumbria.

The agency plans to complete all repair work across the county by the autumn.

Separate work is being done to investigate the cause and extent of flooding in Keswick and identify ways of reducing flood risk in the future.

Cumbria County Council is collating the findings in a flood investigation report and the first draft will be shared with the community at a consultation event at Greta Gardens on May 17 from 6pm to 9pm.

Residents and businesses are urged to attend to provide information and have their say.
