Work to install a new gas pipe which closed a key bridge in Great Broughton is due to finish on Friday.

Last week workers were seen putting the pipe in place to reroute it under the River Derwent after workmen resurfacing Broughton Bridge damaged a gas pipe in January.

Diversions have been in place for drivers travelling between the A66 and the villages of Great Broughton and Little Broughton with Broughton Bridge also being closed.

Resurfacing work is due to be carried out on Monday and the road is due to reopen early next week.

The timescale will depend on weather conditions.

Ricky McMillan, site manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: "We've had to reroute the pipe to ensure the security of the gas supply to Broughton using specialist teams.

"We've worked closely with the Environment Agency and Cumbria Highways to make sure the work is completed in a safe and sustainable way with minimal impact on the immediate environment.

"We anticipate that the work will be completed by the end of February however, in order for us to complete it as quickly and safely as possible and ensure the safety of our engineers and the general public, the bridge will remain closed while the work is carried out.

"We'd like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank everyone for bearing with us as we complete the work as quickly as possible."
