Workington MP Sue Hayman says she opposes air strikes on Syria.

Tomorrow, the House of Commons will discuss the government’s motion calling for military intervention in Syria.

Labour's Mrs Hayman says she will be voting against the motion.

She said: "I do not believe that we will defeat IS through piecemeal intervention.

"It is vital that we have a clear plan, drawing on all the tools at our disposal if we are to defeat IS and help to bring stability to the area.

"Air strikes are not the only way forward.

"A ground presence led by troops from the region will be needed to keep the peace.

"The UK must work closely with states in the region and our allies to develop a plan."

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is giving his MPs a free vote on the issue.

The motion states that IS, also known as Isis, poses an 'unprecedented threat' to the UK and calls on MPs to support "taking military action, specifically airstrikes, exclusively against Isil in Syria".

But Mrs Hayman said: "Together, we must use our economic power as well as military resource, imposing sanctions, cutting off the flow of money that funds IS, targeting human trafficking and providing safety for refugees.

"It is essential that the Prime Minister provides Parliament and the country with assurances that post-conflict reconstruction is not an afterthought.

Syria is a failed state and its broken institutions will need rebuilding.

"We must not repeat the mistakes of the past. Any military action should go hand in hand with humanitarian relief and efforts to create a stable Syria.

"We should now put party politics aside and act in our national interest.

"We have a duty to confront this common enemy together.

"However, it is imperative that the Prime Minister shows he has a wider strategy to do that.

"At the moment, I am not convinced that he has, and unless that changes, I will vote against military action."
