Workington Reds fans are being urged to rally and help secure the long-term future of Borough Park.

Stalwart supporter Joe Sandwith has organised a public meeting at the ground’s social club on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

Former chairman Dale Brotherton will be the main speaker as he outlines his proposal to buy Borough Park and give it back to Reds on a 100-year lease.

The club’s current landlord is Allerdale council and the lease is due to expire in around eight years.

Mr Sandwith said there was some concern that this might not be renewed and urged supporters to attend and give their views on the club’s future.

“We have called a public meeting, to be chaired by a prospective purchaser of the ground in Dale Brotherton,” said Mr Sandwith.

“I would encourage all supporters to attend this meeting. I feel that Borough Park is in a dangerous position with regards to its future.

“We need to start trying to get a new lease and if Dale buys it he is proposing to give the club a 100-year lease.

“We all just want the future of the club secured as this is our home.”

Mr Brotherton is keen to put his ideas across to supporters and he is bringing former Reds manager Tommy Cassidy along to talk about his experience of a multi-use stadium.

Mr Brotherton, who has had an initial meeting with Allerdale council, said: “Since the story of my proposal broke, there has been an outpouring of support and I am expecting a significant number of people to come to the meeting.

“I just want to give people an outline of what my proposals are.

“I want to try to protect the historical importance of Borough Park for Workington Reds.”

Mr Brotherton added that the council was open to ongoing discussions over the future of the ground.

An Allerdale council spokesman said: “We have been working with Workington Reds on their future plans.

“This would need to take into account the regeneration of the area and ensure the best chance of success for the club.

“The council is open minded about how this could be achieved but the commitment, vision and business case has to come from the club and should not be dictated by the council or other third parties.

“We will continue this dialogue and help in any way we can.

“Once these plans have been devised then discussions on future lease arrangements can begin.

“At the moment we are at the start of this process and no decisions have been made.

“We’re committed to supporting and promoting all sport in the area. This includes a strong commitment to ensuring a successful future for Workington Reds.”
