Tesco in Workington has been forced to shut following a power cut.

Electricity went out in the town about 2pm this afternoon, but came back on to many properties shortly after.

However, Tesco, on New Bridge Road, is still without power so has closed its doors to customers.

A spokeswoman said that the power cut has affected the store's checkouts and was unable to give an opening time.

A spokesman for Electricity North West, said: "A damaged cable caused the loss of power to 10,757 customers in Workington this afternoon.

"We automatically restored power to 10,548 customers from our control room within five minutes. Engineers are currently on site working to restore power to the remaining 209 customers.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and if customers would like any further information they can contact us 24/7 on 0800 195 4141 or on Twitter @ElectricityNW."

Morrisons, on Derwent Drive, is also without power but the store is still open to the public.

Businesses in Workington were affected by the power cut for around 10 minutes at around 2pm.

Traffic lights on the Oxford Street and Vulcans Lane junction stopped working.
