Workington Town’s community development manager Marnie Jackson has scooped a top award.

Marnie and the community team have been awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Schools Rugby League for Cumbria in the English Schools RL awards.

And this is just reward for the work that she undertakes on a daily basis on behalf of the club in the community. She will now move on to the national stage of the awards.

Town director Tony Boyd said: “This award is well deserved and shows the sheer amount of work Marnie and the team put into their work in the community.

“The off the field work they do is vital to the club’s future. Marnie and the team are upping the profile of the club, and getting the rugby league message out to schools and amateur clubs.

“We are in dozens of schools meeting hundreds of pupils with the Sky Try programme and our reading initiatives in primary schools so it is all really positive.”

There were more Cumbrian winners with West Lakes Academy’s Alex Price being named teacher of the year for the area.

The school of the year for Cumbria was Whitehaven Academy, while the match official of the year for the county was Jamie Hooper, from the Cumbria Referees Society.

The awards, which are handed out as special recognition for the hard work of volunteers in helping schools rugby league thrive, were decided last week after a flood of nominations.

The RFL’s National Education Manager, Ebony Giblin, said: “The hard work and commitment of all the volunteers that make schools rugby league happen on a weekly basis during the academic year is vital in growing the game.”
