Students from Workington Sixth Form Centre were taken out of their comfort zone when soldiers from the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment put them through a day of challenging tasks.

Around 90 students from year 12 took part in a series of tasks as day of personal development.

The event was organised by Captain Fraser Coleman and Major Lyndsey Wilson, of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, as part of a careers day for the students.

Maj Wilson, senior careers advisor for Cumbria, said: “The day takes the students out of their comfort zone and helps them to learn new skills and work as part of a team.

“The skills that they have learned will help them as they go on in their education and when they eventually move into their future careers.”

Stephen Hunter-Brown, headteacher, said: “This is the first time we’ve done this type of activity day with the army at this time of year.

“They have thoroughly enjoyed the day and it has been a good experience for them.”

Lauren Stilwell, 17, said: “We’ve been working together with people we don’t normally hang around with to complete the activities. The day has been about situations that we normally wouldn’t experience.

“It has opened my eyes to the variety of careers the army offers.”

James Wilson, 17, said: “We will take with us a lot of skills which we can apply to jobs in future.”
