Cockermouth plans diamond jubilee festivities

Cockermouth will hold an event in the Market Place on June 3 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Market Place will close to traffic and tables and chairs will be set out for people to take their own picnic.

Entertainment will be provided during the day.

The event is being organised by Cockermouth’s festival committee, chamber of trade, town council and Rotary.

It is hoped that it will be similar to the Lakes Alive banquet that was held in Cockermouth last year, which was attended by more than 2,000 people.

Jonty Chippendale, vice chairman of the chamber of trade, said: “The town council asked me if we could come up with something for the jubilee but we felt it shouldn’t be just a chamber initiative.

“That is why we have got the other groups involved and it is very much going to be a community-led event.

“We hope to have some entertainment, that Market Place will be dressed with bunting and that the local restaurants and takeaways will get on board or that people can bring their own picnic.”

It is hoped that some funding will be secured from the neighbourhood forum and that tables and chairs can be used from Victoria Hall.

Bob Pritchard, of the town’s festival committee, said: “It is a really good opportunity for the town and that there is something to celebrate.

“It is a chance for people to meet up and have a nice afternoon.”
